What is soul loss — and can shamanic healing help?

Have you ever gone through something deeply painful — a loss, an accident, a betrayal, the end of a relationship — and come out the other side feeling like part of you never quite came back? Like a light went out somewhere inside, and no amount of time or effort has fully relit it?

In shamanic traditions, this experience has a name: soul loss.

It's one of the most ancient concepts in healing, found across indigenous cultures on every continent. And it may explain why some people continue to feel stuck, depleted, or disconnected long after the circumstances of their lives have improved.

What is soul loss?

Shamanic healing is founded on the understanding that we are spiritual beings as much as physical ones — and that our soul, our vital essence, can be affected by what happens to us.

When we experience trauma, overwhelming stress, grief, abuse, or profound shock, a part of our soul energy may fragment and withdraw. This is actually a protective mechanism. That part of you leaves because staying would have been unbearable. In the moment, it may save you. But when it doesn't return — when that part remains lost in what shamanic practitioners call non-ordinary reality — the absence leaves a wound that ordinary healing can struggle to reach.

Psychology calls a similar phenomenon dissociation. Shamanism simply asks a deeper question: where does that part of you go, and how do you get it back?

What does soul loss feel like?

Soul loss can show up in many ways, and it often goes unrecognized because its symptoms look like other things — depression, chronic fatigue, a vague but persistent sense that something is missing.

Some of the most common signs include:

  • Feeling like you've never fully recovered from a particular event, even years later

  • A persistent sense of emptiness or numbness

  • Feeling like an observer of your own life rather than a participant in it

  • Difficulty feeling joy, motivation, or a sense of purpose

  • Recurring patterns you can't seem to break — in relationships, in health, in circumstances

  • A feeling of being energetically depleted no matter how much you rest

  • Chronic physical illness or pain without a clear medical cause

  • A sense that part of you "died" during a difficult period

If any of these resonate, soul loss may be worth exploring — not as a replacement for medical or psychological care, but as a complementary path that works at the spiritual root of what you're experiencing.

What is soul retrieval?

Soul retrieval is the shamanic practice of finding and returning those lost soul parts. It is one of the most powerful and most ancient healing modalities in the shamanic tradition.

In a soul retrieval session, I enter an altered state of consciousness and journey — with the help of my compassionate helping spirits — into non-ordinary reality to find the parts of your soul that have fragmented and withdrawn. These parts may be connected to your joy, your vitality, your creativity, your sense of belonging, or your capacity for trust and love.

When those parts are found and returned to you, clients often describe a remarkable shift. Not a dramatic or sudden transformation, but a settling — a sense of coming home to themselves that they hadn't realized they'd lost.

What a soul retrieval session involves

Every session begins with a diagnostic journey, in which I ask my helping spirits whether I am the right practitioner for you and to establish the framework for our work together. This step matters. Not every practitioner is the right fit for every client, and the spirits guide this process with care.

The full session typically runs 90 minutes to two hours and may include:

  • Soul retrieval — finding and returning fragmented soul parts

  • Extraction — removing harmful energies or power intrusions that may have filled the space left by soul loss

  • Spirit release — compassionately addressing any spirit attachments that may be present

  • Power restoration — returning personal power and vitality

After the session, I share with you what I found and experienced during the journey, and offer guidance for integration — because how you tend to yourself in the days and weeks following a session is part of the healing.

Sessions are available in person in Frederick, MD, and by phone or Zoom. Distance is no barrier to shamanic healing.

Is shamanic healing right for you?

Soul retrieval and shamanic healing are not a substitute for medical or psychological care. If you are dealing with physical illness, mental health challenges, or trauma, please work with qualified medical and mental health professionals as your primary support.

What shamanic healing can offer is a complementary path — one that addresses the spiritual dimension of your experience in ways that other modalities may not reach. Many clients find that shamanic work unlocks something that years of therapy or medical treatment hadn't been able to move.

You might consider a shamanic healing session if:

  • You feel stuck in a pattern that won't shift no matter what you try

  • You're recovering from significant trauma, grief, or loss

  • You're preparing for surgery or a major life transition

  • You're experiencing chronic illness and want to address possible spiritual roots

  • You simply feel that something essential is missing — and you're ready to call it back

A word about working with helping spirits

In my practice, healing is accomplished through the instrumentality of compassionate helping spirits — not through my own power alone. I serve as the bridge. The spirits do the work. This is the foundation of authentic shamanic practice, and it means that each session is guided by wisdom beyond what I could access on my own.

Before our session begins, I always journey to confirm that I am the right practitioner for you. If the spirits indicate I am not, I issue a full refund immediately. This rarely happens, but it reflects my commitment to working with integrity and letting spirit lead.
